It has been long believed that, on September 5th, 1357, Venice had officially granted its protection to the despot of Epirus Nikephoros II, as well as the confirmation of his Venetian citizenship and the recognition of his title of count of Cephalonia. This decision was allegedly taken in the context of the settlement of the revolt of Leukas, supported by Nicephoros, against Graziano Zorzi, Venetian lord of the island and vassal of the Angevines. This opinion has been the backbone of various theories. It must, however, be abandoned since it rests entirely on an erroneous summary of a deliberation of the Venetian Senate.
