Bullying in the school context: Participants’ memories of their childhood

Bullying can be defined as the relationship of intentional violence between peers that is maintained and repeated due to the victims’ inability to defend themselves and react to the attacks. When this occurs at school, we are talking about children and young people, often students of the same age who attend the same classes. Researchers from diverse areas of study have focused on what justifies such a relationship and what can be short – and long – term effects to understand the phenomenon and find prevention and intervention strategies. Some studies reveal that when students are unable to acquire the contents or skills considered necessary to carry on to the following year, deviant behavior transpires (Pereira, 1997; Rebolo Marques, 2016; Saraiva et al., 2019). In this chapter the authors present the reflections of seventeen young adults that were involved in reported episodes of school bullying as aggressors, victims and/or both during schooling. We highlight the differences between their school trajectories and that of ten other young adults that did not participate in reported episodes of school bullying. Study participants are of both genders, aged between 21 and 25 years.Quando esta situação ocorre na escola estamos a falar de crianças e jovens frequentemente colegas da mesma idade que frequentam a mesma turma. O que justifica tal relação e quais os efeitos a curto e a longo prazo têm sido alvo da atenção de investigadores no senti-do de perceber o fenómeno e encontrar estratégias de prevenção e intervenção. Um aspeto que alguns estudos revelam como promotor de comportamentos desviantes e em particular de bullying escolar é a repetição de anos escolares quando os alunos não conseguem adquirir os conteúdos ou as competências consideradas necessárias para transitar ao ano seguinte (Pereira, 1997; Saraiva, Pereira & Cruz, 2019; Rebolo Marques, 2016). Neste capítulo apresentamos as reflexões de dezassete jovens adultos participantes em bullying escolar como agressores, vítimas ou ambos durante a escolaridade e destacamos as diferenças entre os seus percursos escolares e o de outros dez jovens adultos não participantes em bullying escolar.
