Abstract iconographic sources for Stanisław Wyspiański’s drawings related to Ruthenian art

The main purpose of the study presented here is to find an answer to the question about source and scale of Stanisław Wyspiański's interest in Ruthenian themes. It turns out that among nearly a thousand of his early drawings; only forty were related to the Ruthenian art. Some are the drawings of the monuments seen by him during the hike in August 1887, others - during the researching trip in August 1889, the third one are the copies of illustrations in the papers issued in print, mainly in catalogue Exhibitions of Polish-Ruthenian…, which took place in the Lviv, in September 1885. These cartoons were small notes and sketch trials, and did not specifically influence his further work. Their small number also proves that Wyspiański was not particularly interested in Ruthenian art. These outlines were merely an episode in his young self-education: a practical exercise in drawing and a theoretical study of history of ar
