AVALIA\uc7\uc3O DA RESTAURA\uc7\uc3O PASSIVA DE UMA \uc1REA DE MATA ATL\uc2NTICA AP 3S O CORTE RASO DE UMA PLANTA\uc7\uc3O DE Cupressus lusitanica MILL

Cupressus lusitanica has a relatively low potential for fostering colonization of native species beneath the forest canopy. However, following the clearcut of a Cupressus lusitanica plantation in the State Forest of Avar\ue9 (SFA), southeastern Brazil, a vigorous regeneration of Atlantic forest tree and shrub species was observed. We evaluated the passive restoration of this site by comparing its regenerating vegetation to the vegetation established in man-made gaps in Atlantic forest in the State Park of Cantareira (SPC), southeastern Brazil. The frequency distribution of dispersal syndromes for species and the rate of reduction in abundance of pioneer species in a rank/abundance plot did not differ between the two areas. The rarefaction curves for species richness and diversity of the SPC fall below the corresponding curves of the SFA. The proportions of non-pioneer species and of individuals of non-pioneer species were greater in the SFA. The frequency distribution of dispersal syndromes for individuals differed between the two areas due mainly to a more conspicuous predominance of zoochory in the SFA. The rate of reduction in abundance of non-pioneer species in a rank/abundance plot was smaller in the SFA. We concluded that passive restoration may successfully recover native vegetation attributes following the clearcut of forest plantations without conspicuous regeneration of native species beneath the forest canopy. However, this phenomenon may be influenced by particular properties of the forest species, logging practices and faunal seed dispersal integrity.Cupressus lusitanica Mill. possui um potencial relativamente baixo para promover a regenera\ue7\ue3o de esp\ue9cies nativas sob o dossel da floresta. Avaliou-se a restaura\ue7\ue3o passiva desse s\uedtio comparando sua vegeta\ue7\ue3o com a vegeta\ue7\ue3o estabelecida em clareiras artificiais abertas em floresta secund\ue1ria no Parque Estadual da Cantareira (PEC), sudeste do Brasil. A distribui\ue7\ue3o de frequ\ueancia de s\uedndromes de dispers\ue3o para esp\ue9cies e a taxa de redu\ue7\ue3o da abund\ue2ncia das esp\ue9cies pioneiras em um gr\ue1fico de rol de abund\ue2ncia n\ue3o diferiram entre as duas \ue1reas. As curvas de rarefa\ue7\ue3o para riqueza de esp\ue9cies e diversidade do PEC ficaram abaixo das curvas correspondentes da FEA. As propor\ue7\uf5es de esp\ue9cies n\ue3o pioneiras e de indiv\uedduos de esp\ue9cies n\ue3o pioneiras foram maiores na FEA. A distribui\ue7\ue3o de frequ\ueancia de s\uedndromes de dispers\ue3o para indiv\uedduos diferiu entre as duas \ue1reas devido a uma predomin\ue2ncia mais acentuada de zoocoria na FEA. A taxa de redu\ue7\ue3o da abund\ue2ncia das esp\ue9cies n\ue3o pioneiras em um gr\ue1fico de rol de abund\ue2ncia foi menor na FEA. Concluiu-se que a restaura\ue7\ue3o passiva pode recuperar atributos da vegeta\ue7\ue3o nativa ap\uf3s o corte raso de planta\ue7\uf5es florestais desprovidas de consp\uedcua regenera\ue7\ue3o de esp\ue9cies nativas no sub-bosque. No entanto, esse fen\uf4meno pode ser influenciado por propriedades particulares da esp\ue9cie florestal, pr\ue1ticas de explora\ue7\ue3o e integridade da dispers\ue3o de sementes pela fauna
