Evaluaci\uf3n de Ensilajes de Avena y Cebada en la Ganancia de Peso de Vaquillas en Crecimiento

The experiment had the objective of evaluating the effect of applying urea on a 4% DM basis, to oat and barley silages, on the productive performance of growing heifers. The treatments were: (A) oat whole-crop silage, harvested at the dough stage; (C) barley whole-crop silage, harvested at the dough stage; (AU) oat silage harvested at the hard-dough stage, with urea; (CU) and barley silage harvested at the hard-dough stage, with urea. In each treatment, six dual-purpose heifers (327 kg initial live weight) were used over a period of 64 days. The animals were supplemented with concentrate (1.3 kg animal day-1 ) . There were differences in the chemical composition of the silages, barley silage having higher energy concentration and lower fiber content. Urea treatments resulted in silages with a higher N content. Ammonia N and pH were higher in treated silages. Soluble carbohydrate content was higher in those silages treated with urea. Treatment C registered the highest (P 64 0.05) voluntary consumption (8,5 kg MS day-1 ) . The lowest consumption was for CU, while the oat silages had similar intermediate values. No differences were observed (P 65 0.05) in weight gain among the two oat treatments and the CU treatment. Treatment C had the highest live-weight gains (1.35 kg day-1 ) and highest (P 64 0.05) feed conversion efficiency (7.2 kg food kg-1 GPV -1 ). N o productive benefit was observed in using urea on a 4% DM basis as a preserving agent. The best animal performance was observed in treatment C.El ensayo tuvo por objeto evaluar el efecto de la aplicaci\uf3n de urea al 4% base MS, a ensilajes de avena, y cebada, sobre el comportamiento productivo de vaquillas. Los tratamientos fueron: (A) ensilaje de avena en grano pastoso; (C) ensilaje de cebada en grano pastoso; (AU) ensilaje de avena en grano pastoso-harinoso, con urea; (CU) ensilaje de cebada en grano pastoso-harinoso, con urea. En cada tratamiento se usaron seis vaquillas Overo Colorado de 327 kg de peso vivo inicial, durante 64 d\uedas. Los animales fueron suplementados con concentrado (1,3 kg animal d\ueda-1 ). Existieron diferencias en la composici\uf3n qu\uedmica de los ensilajes, destac\ue1ndose la cebada por su mayor concentraci\uf3n energ\ue9tica y menor contenido de fibra. La aplicaci\uf3n de urea result\uf3 en ensilajes con un mayor componente nitrogenado. El N amoniacal y pH en los ensilajes tratados fueron elevados. Los carbohidratos solubles residuales fueron mayores en aquellos tratamientos con urea. El tratamiento C registr\uf3 el mayor (P 64 0,05) consumo voluntario (8,5 kg MS d\ueda-1). El menor consumo fue para CU, mientras que en los ensilajes de avena se registraron valores intermedios y similares entre s\ued. No se observaron diferencias (P 65 0,05) en incremento de peso entre los dos tratamientos a la avena, siendo similares a CU. El tratamiento C registr\uf3 los mayores incrementos de peso (1,35 kg d\ueda-1 ) y mayor (P 64 0,05) eficiencia de conversi\uf3n (7,2 kg alimento kg-1 GPV -1). No se observ\uf3 un beneficio productivo al utilizar un 4% de urea base MS, como agente preservante. La mejor respuesta animal fue para el tratamiento C
