Distribuci\uf3n Espacial y Temporal de la Precipitaci\uf3n y la Humedad del Suelo en Tres Sitios Forestales de la VIII Regi\uf3n de Chile

In Chile there are around two million hectares with forest plantations, the VIII Region being noteworthy, for its favorable climatic conditions. Considering the importance that the hydric regime has on these species, the objective of this study was to characterize the precipitation and soil water content in three sites representative of the Coastal Dry Land, Central Valley and Andean Foothills of the region. The selected sites are located between 37\ub000 and 37\ub045? S. lat. and 72\ub000 and 73\ub010 W. long.. The temperature, rainfall and soil water content were recorded from September 1993 to August 1996. The results indicate that the monthly rainfall in the Andean Foothill site was not statistically different from that registered in the Central Valley and the Coastal Dry Land. The same situation was observed with the mean temperatures. Nevertheless, although temperatures and rainfall were the same in all sites, significant differences were found when comparing the soil water contents. The soil water content in the Andean Foothill site was on average 420 and 440% greater than those observed in the Central Valley and the Coastal Dry Land, respectively. The higher organic matter level in the Andean Foothill site would be the main cause of this phenomenon. This higher water availability was translated into higher rates of growth in the forestry plantation. The results obtained demonstrate the utility of characterizing forest sites through available soil water instead of rainfall.En Chile existen alrededor de dos millones de hect\ue1reas con plantaciones forestales, destac\ue1ndose la VIII Regi\uf3n, por sus favorables condiciones clim\ue1ticas. Considerando la importancia que tiene el r\ue9gimen h\ueddrico sobre estas especies, el objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar las precipitaciones y humedad del suelo en tres sitios representativos de las condiciones de Secano Costero, Valle Central y Precordillera de la regi\uf3n. Los sitios empleados se ubican entre los 37\ub000 y 37\ub045? lat. Sur y 72\ub000 y 73\ub010 long. Oeste. Desde septiembre de 1993 y hasta agosto de 1996 se registraron las temperaturas, precipitaci\uf3n y contenido de humedad del suelo en cada sitio. Los resultados indican que la precipitaci\uf3n mensual en el sitio de Precordillera no fue estad\uedsticamente distinta a la registrada en los sitios del Secano Costero y Valle Central. La misma situaci\uf3n se observ\uf3 con las temperaturas medias. Sin embargo, aunque las temperaturas y precipitaciones fueron iguales en todos los sitios, se encontraron diferencias significativas al comparar los niveles de humedad disponible en el suelo. Los valores registrados en el sitio de Precordillera fueron en promedio 420 y 440% superiores a los observados en el Valle Central y Secano Costero, respectivamente. El elevado contenido de materia org\ue1nica en el sitio de Precordillera ser\ueda la principal causa de este fen\uf3meno. Esta mayor disponibilidad de agua se tradujo en mayores tasas de crecimiento en la plantaci\uf3n forestal. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la conveniencia de caracterizar el sitio forestal mediante la humedad disponible en el suelo en vez del agua ca\uedda
