Evaluaci\uf3n de Ensilaje de Cebada en Tres Estados de Corte en la Engorda Invernal de Novillos

Over a period of 84 days of the winter of 1996, 28 Hereford steers of 20 months of age and 342 kg live weight, were fattened in order to evaluate whole barley silage (Hordeum vulgare) at three cutting periods in comparison to maize silage (Zea mayz) in the Carillanca Regional Investigation Center of the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA). Treatments were T1: maize silage; T2 : barley silage at the milky state ; T3 : barley silage at the starchy state; and T4 : barley silage at the hard starchy state. The silages were offered ad libitum and supplemented daily with concentrates equivalent to 0.9% of the animal live weight on a dry matter basis. The concentrates were formulated with oats, white lupin grains and commercial mineral salts in order to obtain isoproteic rations with 13% CP. The total dry matter intake was assumed to be equivalent to 2.5% of the live weight of the animals. The experimental design was a completely randomized block with 7 replicates. Daily live weight gains were 1.069a ; 0.883b; 1.024a and 0.742c kg day-1 (P 640.05), for treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Daily dry matter intakes were 8.5b ; 8.6ab ; 9.2a and 8.8ab kg animal-1 (P 640.05); feed conversion efficiency was 7.9c ; 9.7b ; 9.0b and 11.8a kg of dry matter kg-1 of live weight gain (P 640.05), for the same treatments, respectively. It was concluded that starchy whole barley silage could replace maize silage in rations for fattening steers without affecting productive performance.En el Centro Regional de Investigaci\uf3n Carillanca, del Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias, ubicado en Temuco, durante 84 d\uedas de la temporada invernal de 1996, se utilizaron 28 novillos Hereford de 20 meses de edad y 342 kg de peso vivo promedio, con el objetivo de evaluar el ensilaje de cebada (Hordeum vulgare) en tres estados de corte en comparaci\uf3n al de ma\uedz (Zea mayz), en raciones de engorda, sobre algunas variables productivas. Los tratamientos estuvieron constituidos por 1) ensilaje de ma\uedz; 2) ensilaje de cebada con grano lechoso; 3) ensilaje de cebada con grano harinoso; y 4) ensilaje de cebada con grano harinoso duro. Los ensilajes se entregaron a discreci\uf3n, complement\ue1ndolos con cantidades diarias fijas de concentrados, equivalentes al 0,9% del peso vivo de los animales, base materia seca. Los concentrados se formularon, para cada ensilaje, con grano de avena (Avena sativa), grano de lupino australiano (Lupinus angustifolius) y sales minerales comerciales, de forma tal que la oferta de alimentos fuera isoproteica al 13%, asumi\ue9ndose un consumo total de materia seca equivalente al 2,5% del peso vivo de los animales. El dise\uf1o experimental fue de bloques completos al azar, con 7 repeticiones. Los incrementos de peso vivo fueron de 1,069a; 0,883b; 1,024a y 0,742c kg d-1 (P 640,05), para los tratamientos 1, 2, 3 y 4, respectivamente. Los consumos diarios de materia seca correspondieron a 8,5b; 8,6ab; 9,2a y 8,8ab kg animal-1 (P 640,05); la eficiencia de conversi\uf3n fue de 7,9c; 9,7b; 9,0b y 11,8a kg de MS kg-1 de incremento de peso vivo (P 640,05), para los mismos tratamientos, respectivamente. Se concluye que el ensilaje de cebada al estado de grano harinoso puede reemplazar al ensilaje de ma\uedz, en raciones de engorda de novillos, sin lesionar la respuesta productiva
