Audit in medical practice has conventionally been taken to refer to self-accounting on the part of medical professionals or health care institutions to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the services they render to the community. Its ultimate purpose is to improve standards in clinical care and encourage efficient utilisation of resources. In structure, medical audit takes two main forms - an outcome review to assess the quality of care being received by patients, and a utilisation review to assess the cost-effectiveness of the approaches being used to deliver care.
