International audienceIn Classical Greece, relations between members of the elite, especially the bonds of hospitality, gradually became regulated by cities. Once they were made public through proxenia, the interpersonal relations of xenia turned into a sort of infringement on the public institution. However, proxenia appears to have been limited to relations between Greeks, but the cities needed informal relations of the elites with the non-Greeks. Thus, in the cities’ gradual take-over of xenia there was a gap, and xenia between Greeks and Persians was at the same time both necessary to cities and suspect, given the power cities entrusted in the hands of those who took part in it.
