Se discuten las correlaciones entre el registro arqueológico y la información histórica, lingüística y/o étnica, y particularmente el papel de la etnología comparativa a la hora de identificar grupos humanos a partir de la materialidad. Analizando los dilemas del modelaje de la “civilización tupí-guaraní” en la obra temprana de Alfred Métraux, se revisan críticamente las “metonimias” o “sinécdoques étnicas” que surgen al establecer identificaciones colectivas a través de rasgos culturales.
