PREFACE : The essays offer insights of social, cultural, legal and religious history of Eritrea during the colonial period, conveying new spaces of knowledge on Italian colonial history in Africa. The colonial "encounter" was inevitably violent, but it appears also as a process of "creative destruction", accelerating political, economic and social change and promoting the formation of new forms of belonging and identity – not always antagonistic – in the colonial society as a whole
