U.S. fights salt land with crop management

Two-page article explains the visit by Ross George of the Resource Management Division of the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to Canada and the United States where he had the opportunity to observe first-hand the salt land problem and the techniques of salt land management. Mr. George received a Public Works Department grant to travel to the United States to study water scheduling schemes in their irrigation areas and while there visited the salt land areas. Trevor Stoneman, also of the Department of Agriculture and Ross George delivered papers on dry land salinity at the International Soil Science Conference in Edmonton, Canada. Salinity problems began to develop in the Northern Great Plains region of the U.S. and Canada in the 1950s and it has been quoted that the area affected is increasing at 10 per cent per year.
