State has extensive salt research, MacKinnon

Article discusses the response from the Minister for Public Works and Water Supplies, Mr. G.C. MacKinnon to a Farmers' Union question which appeared in the Farmers Weekly about research into Western Australia's salinity problems and the Whittington proposals. Mr. MacKinnon said "Already in this State very extensive studies of the salinity problem have been continuing for some years. The investment in these studies has been substantially higher in recent years than previously." Also in response to the Whittington query, Mr. MacKinnon said, "The Whittington proposals as they affect stream salinity are the subject of special investigation taking place at Batalling Creek." "The basis of Mr. Whittington's proposals are that following clearing additional water and salt is transported along a relatively impermeable layer fairly close to the surface down slope towards the valley bottom."
