Protecting land from salt

Letter sharing the views of S.A.J. Fletcher, general president, National Country Party (WA), in response to Ian McK. Moore's letter (April 28) regarding the effects of salinity seems to miss the point. Agreeing that farmers have contributed substantially to salinity encroachment with the clearing of land. The National Country Party supports further testing on a theory by farmer, Mr. Harry Whittington who is engaged in reclaiming salt lands using methods which have proved effective to date with experimental plots. The Government should expand the level of experimentation at present being conducted on the Whittington method and other methods of salt land experimentation. The National Country Party is concerned over the proposed bauxite mining and believes the community should have the fullest opportunity to assess all the facts before the Government gives a green light to any mining company.
