This thesis consists of two volumes submitted by Henry Briscoe as part of the Clinical Psychology Doctorate. The first chapter of volume I consists of a meta-analysis of the relationship between theory of mind and anxiety. The key finding here was that anxiety and theory of mind were negatively related in children. That is, higher levels of anxiety were related to poorer performance on theory of mind tasks. The second chapter details research on the effect of anxiety and ethnicity on perspective taking. Here, it was found that when the target was of a different ethnicity, participants were less likely to take their perspective spontaneously – regardless of if they were anxious.
