The recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) motivate its ubiquitous use for computer vision with applications in several fields, such as autonomous and assisted navigation. Deep learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, is shown to be useful, for example, in object detection and semantic segmentation tasks. Such algorithms achieved high performance in terms of accuracy and computational time compared to conventional techniques. However, new application areas, such as providing information for arbitrary environments to address, for example, indoor navigation or simultaneous indoor and outdoor navigation, introduce several challenges that should be overcome.
