Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is known as the universal energy carrier of living cells. In addition, ATP plays an important role as a paracrine and autocrine signalling molecule. The release of ATP is involved in many biological processes such as the regulation of the immune system and inflammatory responses, but ATP also has an important function as a neurotransmitter. Since the ATP concentrations relevant for these processes are in the nanomolar range at the cell surface, measuring them is a technical challenge.
