Ritual odours in the south of tunisia. The meanings and symbols of the majmûa. Because of its magic, religious and mystical dimensions, the majmûa, a typical incense in South Tunisia, appears as a ritual figure presenting a very high degree of systematization from the point of view of its internal, osmological organization as well as that of its external, mimodramatic expression. This totalizing and mediatizing structure constitutes, quite obviously, an attempt to reconcile the opposites, life and death, good and evil, microcosm and macrocosm, man and God. It also seems that in its preventive and therapeutic functions, the majmûa, a symbol of the self, corresponds to a hierotherapic rite, that is to say to a treatment method through the sacred.De par ses dimensions magiques, religieuses et mystiques, la majmûa, encens typique du Sud tunisien, apparaît comme une figure rituelle présentant un degré très élevé de systématisation, tant du point de vue de son organisation osmologique interne que de celui de son expression mimodramatique externe. Cette structure totalisante et médiatisante constitue, selon toute évidence, une tentative pour concilier les contraires, la mort et la vie, le mal et le bien, le microcosme et le macrocosme, l'homme et Dieu. Il semble également que, dans ses fonctions préventive et thérapeutique, la majmûa, symbole du Soi, corresponde à un rite hiérothérapique, c'est-à-dire à une méthode de traitement par le Sacré.Nakbi Jean-Louis.
