Critical to early economic development of European valleys, the use of watermills as a tool of production has been progressively marginalized. Weirs and mills remain and are the material testimony of the ancient technical system, most of them are considered as part of a collective heritage. They are now used for recreational activities (angling, hiking, canoeing), which require high water level during the long and pronounced low water period (June to October).
