Marine geography is concerned with the transition from the neoindustrial economy to the postindustrial stage. This ligitimizes a reassessment of scientific research. At this stage the system-based approach appears useful due to three features : (i) the analysis is holistic ; (ii) methodologies are founded on a diachronic level ; (iii) structural changes, i.e. the phases of discontinuous change, are carefully investigated. It is fit that a large cooperation be set up at the theoretical and methodological levels, on the one hand, and at level of empirical investigations, on the other.
