Si trabajos anteriores han ampliado nuestra compresión del proceso revolucionario mexicano más allá de sus dicotomías más obvias y de la temporalidad 1910-1921, el libro de Nathaniel Morris complejiza y enriquece el análisis que aborda desde el Gran Nayar, una región habitada mayoritariamente por poblaciones náayarite (coras), wixaritari (huicholas), o´dam (tepehuanas del sur), mexicaneras, y algunas mestizas en el occidente de México. Con este libro, llena un vacío historiográfico pendiente y restituye el papel histórico que estas sociedades jugaron en uno de los grandes episodios mexicanos al sur de la Sierra Madre Occidental, región en la que la guerra se prolongó hasta la primera y segunda guerra cristera, a finales de la década 1930
