Acute inflammatory response to lipopolysaccharicle (LPS) exposure is typically associated with cardiac myocyte apoptosis, which is difficult to quantity because of heart tissue specificity. We report here that radioidinated Annexin V (I-123,I-125-AnxV), a specific ligand of phosphaticylserine exposed by apoptotic cells, allows tissue detection of apoptosis in LPS-treated rat hearts. Heart I-123-AnxV uptake was significantly increased in all cardiac territories of LPS-treated rats.
