The Authors present a brief review about the hygienic problems related to the disinfection and sterilization of endoscopes. The principal risks of infection caused by the use of endoscopes are described, and the various compounds and the different procedures commonly used for the disinfection of endoscopes are illustrated. The paper reports the problems which arise from the use of chemicals by the medical and paramedical personnel and the importance of training. Finally the advantages and disadvantages of automatic washers are discussed
