Formulación de una propuesta metodológica para la gestión integral de residuos químicos peligrosos en instituciones de educación superior

In chemical analysis laboratories a great amount of products are handled and many different operations are carried out, either for educational processes or research purposes which lead to the generation of hazardous waste. These are varied and highly complex because of the complex matrix they are part of. Therefore they present abigger challenge when dealing with them. The objectiveof this investigation was to formulate a methodologicalproposal for the management of hazardous chemical wastebased on the University’s Waste Management Plan. In orderto assess the methodology’s proper development, the workwas done together with the general chemistry laboratories,by doing a preliminary diagnosis and quantifying the totalamount of waste generated. Then we characterize it sincethis stage of the methodology is crucial for the managementand identification of the waste for further treatment. Oncethe first stages of the methodology were through, we wentahead and applied the treatments which lowered thetemporary storage of chemical waste, by eliminating it byevaporation, encapsulation and bioremediation by 35%of the total waste generated in 2010. We were also able toproperly apply the established methodology, obtainingresults in the improvement of the waste segregation andcharacterization, helping lower the uncontrolled storage,that it was in the temporary storage room, which didnot have any kind of treatment or control. This situationpresented a high risk of environmental impact for theinstitution in the long term.En la Universidad de Pamplona, se formuló una propuesta metodológica para la gestión integral de los residuos químicos peligrosos con base a un plan de manejo. Para verificar el funcionamiento de la metodología, se trabajó con los laboratorios de química general, se realizó preliminarmente un diagnóstico y cuantificación total de las cantidades que allí se generaban, con el fin de poder caracterizarlos ya que esta etapa de la metodología es clave para la gestión e identificación de los residuos para su posterior tratamiento. Una vez efectuadas las primeras etapas de la metodología, se procedió a implementar los tratamientos que, disminuyeron el almacenamiento temporal de los residuos químicos, se eliminaron por medio de evaporización, encapsulamiento, y biorremediacion un 35% de los residuos generados en el año 2010. Asimismo se logró que la metodología establecida se ejecutara adecuadamente, obteniéndose resultados en el mejoramiento de la segregación y caracterización de los residuos, que contribuyó a disminuir el almacenamiento sin ningún tipo de tratamiento y control en el almacén temporal, que a largo plazo podría presentar un riesgo e impacto ambiental para la institución
