Bos galerianus comes from the Ponte Galeria Formation. Its stratigraphical position indicates an approximate age of 0,75 My. The characters of Bos galerianus, probably of Asian origin, are very different from the coeval species of bisons and buffaloes and are less derived than European Bos primigenius and than the Indian Bos acutifrons and Bos namadicus. Bos galerianus is a new element of the faunas related to Galerian Mammal Age. The biochronology of the genus Bos in Europe, thus, is modified: Bos galerianus characterizes the early Middle Pleistocene (Early and Middle Galerian faunas), while Bos primigenius occurs in middle the Middle and Late Pleistocene (Late Galerian and Aurelian faunas)
