Effect of Pumpkin Seed Oil for the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia: Formulation and In-Vitro Evaluation

Based on the study, it was summarized and concluded that the λ max of PSO was found to be 264 nm in phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 and it obeys Beer’s law within concentration 1-8μg/ml. FTIR studies of pure drug and physical mixture showed that there were no interaction between drug and excipients. Seven batches of PSO hair gel were prepared by using varying concentration of polymers (Carbopol 940 and HPMC K 100).The pre formulation parameters were found within the required limit, indicating suitable to formulate hair gel using PSO. The post formulation parameters such as pH, viscosity, spreadability, homogeneity, extrudability, drug content and in-vitro release studies of all the formulation were within acceptable limits. Based on in-vitro release studies, it was concluded F3 formulation was selected as the optimized formulation and the extent of drug release was found to be 76 % in 8 h. The drug release kinetics follows zero order and non-fickian diffusion mechanism. Cell cytotoxicity study done in optimized formulation (F3) and it was concluded cell viability > 50 % in concentration 10-500μg/ml, indicating that the formulation is non-irritant to skin. The present work has achieved the objective of formulating a safe, cost efficient and effective topical hair gel targeted to treat androgenetic alopecia and produce sustained drug delivery, However, further clinical studies are conducted in the same direction to enhance the therapeutic efficacy and improve the patient compliance
