Struggling with terms: the translation of Western economics in late Qing China

The formation of the modern Chinese lexicon was deeply influenced by the introduction of new sciences and technologies from the West. Based on a wide selection of loans and neologisms collected in 19th century economic sources, this article examines the processes of word-formation that prevailed in the semantic area of economics.
