In this paper, a method for sizing the reactive power compensation in a non-interconnected island power system is presented and applied to determine the necessary inductive reactive power compensation for the autonomous power system of Rhodes Island, Greece. The Rhodes power system is often confronted with an excess of reactive power, as a result—inter alia—of underground high-voltage (HV) cable lines and distributed generation penetration.
