Using spin-polarized positronium (Ps) annihilation spectroscopy, the electron spin polarization of top-surface layer can be determined because Ps is formed only at the vacuum side of the surface. If the energy-resolved and spin-polarized Ps annihilation spectroscopy is available, the spin-polarized electron density of states associated only with the top-surface layer of metals will be obtained. In particular, the spin polarization at the Fermi level is very important to evaluate the spin transportation in devices in connection with the spin-Hall effect, Rashba effect and topological insulators.
