The onset of the 1918 ‘Spanish’ Flu epidemic in New Zealand was rife with political and social controversy. Political contenders, including then Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey faced an onslaught of misinformation about the spread of the disease, and public health officials were all but helpless in their attempts to stop the virus’ diffusion across the nation. The native Maori population died at seven times the rate of the white, Pakeha population. Treatments were few in number, dangerous, and caused widespread distrust in the medical establishment.
