Prompt Recognition and Management of E-cigarette, or Vaping, Use-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI)

E-cigarette use increased by 900% from 2011-2015 among middle and high school students in the United States.1 They are currently the most commonly used form of tobacco product in youths. Despite the public perception that e-cigarettes, or vaping, use is a safe alternative to the traditional use of tobacco, there are serious health implications. E-cigarette, or vaping, use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is a dangerous pulmonary condition associated with the use of such products. The prevalence, symptoms, diagnostic approach, management, and complications will be presented. EVALI often causes fevers, cough, shortness of breath, and nausea. This condition can lead to varying forms of pneumonia, requiring supplemental oxygen and close monitoring. Symptoms may appear similar to other conditions, such as COVID-19, causing EVALI to be overlooked.
