European integration is currently entering a new phase. The European Union (EU) as a common political project of European nation-states is contested by increasing Euroscepticism and populism. EU widening mirrors the broader changes within the European integration process as it redefines the EU’s borders, challenges the idea of European identity and calls for structural and institutional adjustments.
