Benthic and nectobenthic hydrobionts of the Barents Sea contain 10.2-19.2 mg % of hydrocarbons. Normal and ramified alkanes are presented by the wide range of molecular weights and structures with nC17, nC19 and iC19, iC20 dominating. The content of alkanes varies from 0.2 to 1.5 mg per 100 g of fresh weight. Most of the studied organisms are shown to contain petroleum hydrocarbons
