Colonization of Women in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple

Abstract: This paper aims at bringing about a brief, yet comprehensive discussion on gender oppression and struggles in historically colonized cultures on the grounds of postcolonial literature (SELDEN; WIDDOWSON; BROOKER, 2005). In this means, an analysis of women’s objectification and subjectification in Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple (1985) is carried out. In the concluding remarks it is unveiled how black women characters in Walker’s novel find themselves free from black men’s colonizing impositions through female bonding, courage and persistence. Resumo: Este artigo visa trazer uma breve, porém abrangente discussão acerca da opressão de gênero e as lutas em culturas historicamente colonizadas a partir da literatura pós-colonial (SELDEN; WIDDOWSON; BROOKER, 2005). Dessa forma, é realizada uma análise da objetificação e da subjetivação feminina no romance A Cor Púrpura (1985), de Alice Walker. Nas considerações finais, desvela-se como as personagens mulheres negras do romance de Walker libertam-se das imposições colonizadoras dos homens negros por meio do vínculo feminino, da coragem e da persistência.Palavras-chave: Literatura pós-colonial.
