Technical analysis: new insights about macd indicator

Durante o último século, vários investigadores tentaram desafiar a validade da Teoria dos Mercados Eficientes através da análise técnica, mas até agora os resultados não são unânimes e nenhuma conclusão foi alcançada. O indicador técnico Moving Average Convergence and Divergence é um dos mais famosos e muito tem sido escrito acerca dele. Esta dissertação investiga a rentabilidade de algumas técnicas e combinações clássicas que são apresentadas na literatura, mas que carecem de prova empírica. Os testes foram aplicados a uma amostra diversificada de trinta activos financeiros, cobrindo um período superior a 2300 dias de transacção, tendo sido obtidos resultados que desencorajam a utilização de algumas técnicas famosas, como a combinação 12-26-9 que gerou uma perda média anual de 0.13%, contra uma variação positiva de 2.97% da estratégia Buy-and-Hold. No entanto resultados supreendentes foram obtidos quando as mesmas metodologias foram aplicadas a combinações pouco usuais, assumidas por outros autores como não rentáveis. Após aplicar estas estratégias foi possível gerar uma rentabilidade anual média entre 7.51% e 9.30%, obtendo ainda uma redução do risco de descida e, assim, aumentando o rácio rentabilidade-risco. Estes resultados são estatisticamente significativos com base na amostra considerada e vão contra as Teorias do Mercados Eficiente e Passeio Aleatório. Os resultados obtidos poderão ser importantes para os investidores na definição das suas carteiras, assim como abre as portas a novas investigações sobre a habilidade da análise técnica para gerar ganhos de capital.Over the last century several researchers have tried to challenge the validity of the Efficient Market Hypothesis with technical analysis, but so far the results are not unanimous and no final conclusion was reached. The Moving Average Convergence and Divergence (MACD) technical indicator is among the most famous indicators and much has been written about it. This dissertation investigates the profitability of some classical techniques and combinations for this indicator which have been presented in the literature but still lack empirical evidence. The methodologies were applied to a diversified sample of thirty financial instruments for a period of over 2300 trading days and the results discourage the application of some of the well-known techniques, as the 12-26-9 combination which generated an average annual loss of 0.13%, against the gain of 2.97% concerning the Buy-and-Hold strategy. However, interesting outcomes were achieved when applying the same methodology with uncommon used combinations, as they were assumed to be generally unprofitable and therefore discarded by previous academics. With these methodologies the returns consistently beat the market and were able to generate an average annual return between 7.51% and 9.30%. Moreover, it was also achieved a reduction of the downside risk enhancing, therefore, the return on risk ratios. The results are statistically significant and run against the Efficient Market and Random Walk Theories.
