This working paper is concerned with the research design and ethical aspects connected with conducting research with terminally ill patients, their family members and palliative care professionals. The first section describes the design of the research for this study. The strengths and weaknesses of employing observation and interviewing techniques are discussed. The second section explores the ethical issues of conducting research with terminally ill patients and those who care for them in the last weeks and days of their lives. The difficulties of gaining informed consent from these research participants are highlighted. The third section examines the process of qualitative data analysis.
