El género de murciélagos insectívoros Rhogeessa, pertenecientes a la familia Vespertilionidae cuenta con diez especies para el Neotrópico, de las cuales: R. hussoni, R. io, R. minutilla y R. velilla están representadas en Suramérica. Para Colombia se reconoce la presencia de R. io y R. minutilla, en las bioregiones Andina, Caribe, Orinoquia y Pacifica, abarcando altitudes desde el nivel del mar, hasta los 2600 metros. A pesar de lo anterior no existe precisión sobre los límites geográficos de la distribución de estas especies en el país y a la fecha, no se ha evaluado la morfología de estos taxones por lo que se siguen empleando caracteres inconsistentes y ambiguos en la determinación.
