Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the blood of mammals and its metabolism is particularly important for tumour cell proliferation. Cancer cells metabolize glutamine mostly through glutaminolysis, a metabolic process catabolized by glutaminase (GLS) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) that activates mTORC1 signalling. Together with AMPK, the mTORC1 pathway is a key regulator of cell growth and proliferation.
