An assessment of the resilience in subjects in an addiction treatment programme

(Social Science)This research study aimed to primarily describe resilience enhancement in subjects subjected to the Full Circle Recovery Programme© (FCRP) of Wedge Gardens Treatment Centre, situated in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and secondarily to assess the contribution of the addiction treatment programme regarding the subjects’ perception of recovery. This research’s quasi-experimental design was a Pre-test Post-test control group design. This research design was unusual in that one group was an experimental group, which was exposed to the dependent variable X – in this case, the one-month addiction treatment programme. The other group was a non-random control group, which was not exposed to the dependent variable X. This was owing to subjects absconding or leaving the treatment programme before the completion of one month. Two quantitative instruments were used in the study: the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Perception of Recovery Scale (PRS), which was developed specifically for the FCRP. Connor and Davidson (2003, p. 76) postulated that their CD-RISC “demonstrates that resilience is modifiable and can improve with treatment, with greater improvement corresponding to higher levels of global improvement”. The objective of the study was to assess the extent to which the FCRP exceeded in cognitively altering subjects’ perceived levels of resilience over the period of time of the addiction treatment programme..
