Indigenous agency and environmental degradation follow sinuous paths, and both depend on state policies that promote development and ecocide. The Arakbut people, who live southeast of the Peruvian Amazon, have long respected the natural and spiritual worlds. They lived isolated until 1950. But since the 1970s, the presence of gold miners and traders increased in their territories. More than 16 tons of gold are extracted per year, spilling more than 45 tons of mercury into the environment. To survive, the Arakbut learned to mine gold.
