Implementing the speaking simulation strategy as a motivational element in a Secondary School classroom : a didactic proposal

Curs: 2021/2022Learner’s motivation is crucial in the process of learning a new language. One of the major issues teachers have when teaching English as a foreign language is the pupils' lack of enthusiasm. The purpose of this paper is to test the effectiveness of spoken strategies in motivating secondary school students to learn English. To investigate this issue, 47 students from 1st year of ESO were analysed through a questionnaire about the motivation they presented in class. This questionnaire was carried out after the implementation of a playful proposal in which one of the strategies was selected to promote motivation in terms of oral production in English. On the other hand, the use of peer assessment was also considered as another motivating element for students. The results obtained have determined an improvement in the students' grades in terms of oral production in English and in their motivation to speak English in the classroom. After implementing the didactic proposal, the data analysis has determined that students have gained confidence to use the English language in the classroom
