Three days before the 2016 presidential election, Facebook users started circulating a story from The Denver Guardian about a supposed murder-suicide committed by a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent who was investigating presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The author of the story suggested that this act was actually a “‘hit job’ by the Clintons in retaliation for the FBI email leaks so close to the presidential election.” The story peaked at over 100 shares per minute.
