Add to ORKGProper handling can turn large, bare areas of saltland into productive areas on most farms. According to senior advisor with the Department of Agriculture's irrigation branch, Ken Cole, a mixture of saltbushes can provide forage as well as some shelter on the salt areas, while careful tree planting around the edges of the areas will provide both shade and shelter. By mixing seed of upright species such as quail bush and old man saltbush, considerable shelter as well as some feed will be provided. Mr Cole said by establishing suitable species and allowing a consolidation period, the salt areas can become useful grazing areas.
