Over the last 50 years, the reduction of automotive emissions has been a critical component of environmental legislation. The catalytic converter is one of the tools used by automotive engineers to reduce emissions: it facilitates the conversion of residual fuels and CO to CO2 and the reduction of NOx to N2 over the ‘three-way catalyst’ (TWC) containing a mix of precious metals, such as Pt, Rh, or Pd supported on high surface area γ-Al2O3.
