Territorial Analysis: Data Acquisition Methodologies and Strategies for the Reconstruction of the Ancient Landscape in Protohistorical Contexts

This contribution will present an approach in the organization of spatial data and the study of the context applied to three protohistorical sites: the island of Vivara (territory of Procida and Vivara, Naples), Monastiraki (Amari Valley, Crete) and Mursia (Pantelleria, Sicily). The study of a site and its surrounding territory, both past and present, includes the acquisition of spatial data that may belong to multiple disciplines. The binding factor for such data is given by their geo-referencing, which enables the placing of all data and documentation into a framework of digital cartographies capable of producing a constantly updatable information system. The means, which enable such georeferencing (Total Station, Differential GPS, Laser Scanner), have undergone a rapid evolution, enabling a characterization at an increasingly higher level of detail and a better and more rigorous contextualization of surveyed data within digital cartographies. Through digital multimedia platforms, viewing and analysis of diverse forms of information is possible and can be accessed through advanced exhibition installations such as immersive and augmented virtual environments also ideal for new forms of cultural tourism
