Through an analysis of selected accounts, the paper investigates the state of culture in the late-ancient West and the related activities of schools of rhetoric and law. In particular, the paper aims at providing some further insights into a regenerated and increasingly autonomous school activity, emerged in the provinces of the Empire in the fifth and sixth century AD, a fundamental objective of cultural policy, first of the Roman emperors, then of barbarian kings
