Virological and histopathological investigations on 6 lambs and 2 kids still birth and dead at 1-2 weeks of age showing severe enteric symptoms are reported. From the organs of all the animals (spleen, brain, thimus) pestivirus strains were isolated on lamb kidney cell coltures (IRO4) and typed as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) or Border Disease Virus (BDV) by RT-PCR assay. The histopatological lesions consisted of areas of hypomyelination in the brain, and a slight depletion of thymic medullary lymphocytes associated with increase in reticular cells
