Extractive Reserves (Resex) are considered a category of conservation unit for sustainable use, established by Law nº. 9,985 of July 18, 2000 (Law on the National System of Conservation Units). Resex are territorial spaces used by traditional extractive communities, which guarantee their subsistence in extractivism or in the mixed activity of agro-extractivism. In Brazil, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) is responsible for managing 324 federal Conservation Units.
