Melihat Indonesia terletak pada daerih trolis yang mempunyai hari guruh yang tinggi, yaitu berkisar 100 ( seratus ) hari / tahun, terjadinya sambaran langsung petir terhadap suatu gedung tersebu-t. Sambarln petir pada suatu objek dapat mengakibatkan kerusakan dan ditimbulkan kerugian materi maupun non materi. Untuk menanggulangi kerugian akibat sambaran petir, diperlukan sistem proteksi. Dengan adanya gangguan ikutan yang mungkin terjadi pada suatu gedung / bangunan yang terkena samUaran langsung petir, oleh karena itu perlu adanya analisis yang lebih lanjut terhadap suatu gedung bangunan, guna dilakukan pemasangan sistem proteksi eksternal terhadip suatu gedung bertingkat, yang bertujuan menghindari sambaran langsung petir. Seringkali, biaya yang diperlukan untuk maksud tersebut tidak sedikit jumla[nya, maka iring muncul pertanyaan sampai seberapa besar rnanfaat yang diperoleh jika pemasangan suatu sistem proteksi atau sampai seberapa besar kerugian atau resiko yung uf* timbul bila terjadi sambaran petir pada objek di mana sistem proteksi tidakierpasang. Sistem proteksi eksternal adalah bagian dari sistem proteksi ietir yang bekeda untuk mengalirkan arus pefir ke daerah atau tempat yang ditentukan ( dibumikan ) bila terjadi sambaran langsung petir, sehingga gedung yang tersambar dapat terhindar dari bahaya yang diakibatkan oleh sambaran langsung petir tersebut.
