Terms of Location in English and Vietnamese Metaphorical Expressions of Love

Metaphor, according to cognitive view, is fundamentally conceptual [17]. It is not in language but in thought. Most abstract domains, especially love are described by metaphors. Metaphors of love have been much studied till now. However,terms of location which are used in metaphorical expressions of love have hardly been mentioned in detail.Therefore in this paper, we only focus on investigating the terms of location in linguistic metaphors of love in over 980 English and Vietnamese love poems. The findings are rather interesting with the diversity of these terms in love metaphorical expressions in the two languages. They are also relatively similar between English and Vietnamese by virtue of the ‘universality of metaphors' [7]. Concurrently, there are also some dissimilarities detected between English and Vietnamese because of the influences of Western and Eastern culture on the ways of using language in expressing love
